We are very pleased that you have taken the time to inform yourself about modern procedures for the treatment of varicose veins and our services. Our team has been involved in the examination and treatment of vein disorders for about 25 years. For a long time, the practice was located in the Hirslanden Clinic in Zurich. Since 2011, we have been welcoming our patients in the listed former factory building of Café Hag in Felmeilen. This preferred location near the train station Herrliberg-Feldmeilen with excellent connections (S6, S16) and sufficient parking offers optimal accessibility.

The range of treatments has expanded and improved significantly over the last 15 years. For most people with varicose veins there is a solution or at least relief. We doctors of the Vein Center, Prof. Dr. med. Markus Enzler and Dr. med. Maurizio Camurati, have specialized in modern endovenous treatment methods, in particular the thermal ablation of diseased truncal veins with radio waves (ClosureFast® = Venefit®) or radial laser (ELVeS Biolitec®). We have many years of experience in this field. These procedures enable outpatient, low-pain elimination of varicose veins in our vein center. We perform the procedures under local anesthesia, without hospitalization and anesthesia, and usually without loss of working hours.

The costs of thermal ablation are covered by some supplementary insurances in Switzerland, but will probably not be covered by the mandatory basic insurance until January 2016. This is astonishing in two respects: thermal ablation, which is always performed on an outpatient basis, costs much less than stripping surgery (which is usually performed as an inpatient procedure)!

In addition, international evidence-based professional bodies such as the "Australian Medical Services Advisory Committee", the "Society for Vascular Surgery" and the "American Venous Forum" have declared endovenous thermal ablation the preferred treatment method for varicose veins! In the guidelines of the European Society for Vascular Surgery, thermal ablation is also recommended in the first place. The rationale for the recommendation is that thermal ablation is less invasive but "at least as efficient as stripping surgery" and that "serious complications such as thrombosis, nerve damage, infection, and bruising" are less common (MSAC, quoted from Wikipedia).

Only occasionally is conventional surgery with stripping and crossectomy still appropriate. If indicated, we perform such procedures at the Hirslanden Clinic or at the Pyramid Clinic on the Lake. Smaller varicose veins and spider veins can be treated with good and lasting success by injection or sclerotherapy on an outpatient basis.

Examination

The diagnosis and especially the therapy of varicosis has undergone rapid development in recent years. Until a few years ago, complex examinations were necessary to get a picture of the venous reflux and the resulting venous hypertension.

Under the influence of technical development in medicine as a whole and especially in phlebology (venous medicine), it has come to the application of modern non-invasive hemodynamic and morphological/imaging diagnostic procedures.

At the Venenzentrum am See, we offer holistic vein clarification using the most modern equipment available. Our specialists, Prof. Dr. med. Markus Enzler and Dr. med. Maurizio Camurati, have specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of varicose veins. Our doctors have an enormous amount of experience with all current methods of varicose vein treatment.

Nowadays, the most important tool in the diagnosis of varicosis is duplex sonography. It has practically revolutionized the assessment of the venous system and, in skilled hands, is an excellent tool for the diagnosis of venous diseases and for monitoring the progress of the therapeutic success after treatment.
