ANGIOLOGY

Its etymology comes from the ancient Greek AGGEION (container, vessels, capsule) and LOGOS (sciences).

Since the 60s, Switzerland has recognized this discipline, promoting the creation of specialized departments in all Swiss university hospitals.

Until 1990, the discipline was recognized as a sub-specialty of internal medicine and dermatology; ten years later, angiology became a specialty in its own right, a situation unique in the world.

Angiology is a medical specialty covering the diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and prevention of vascular, arterial, venous, lymphatic or microcirculatory disorders.

The prevalence of peripheral arterial disease in the population is around 2% (35-44 age group), 6% (45-54 age group) and 11% (55-64 age group); it increases considerably in the older age groups.
The prevalence of peripheral venous disease has been estimated at 22% at age 20 and 75% at age 60, with a clear predominance of women.

The prevalence of cerebrovascular disorders in Great Britain has been estimated at 4.5/1000 inhabitants.

On this basis, a committee of European experts ("European Working Group on Medical Angiology") published an estimate of the needs of the European population at 1-2 angiologists per 100,000 inhabitants (Vasa, 1992; 21:3-5).
With a population of 8 million, Switzerland's needs can therefore be estimated at 80-160 installed angiologists.

According to statistics from the Swiss Medical Association (FMH), 110 angiologists (20% of them women) were in private practice in 2002, although there are significant geographical disparities,
